Back then, the internet was a relatively small network used primarily by academic and research institutions. It was during this time that a young computer enthusiast by the name of Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. inadvertently unleashed what would later be known as the world’s first cyber attack.

Morris, a graduate student at Cornell University, was fascinated by the emerging field of computer networking. Eager to test the limits of this new technology, Morris set out to create a program that would gauge the size of the internet by exploiting vulnerabilities in its infrastructure.

On November 2, 1988, Morris released his program onto the internet. The program, later dubbed the Morris Worm, was designed to spread from one computer to another, exploiting vulnerabilities along the way. However, Morris made a critical mistake in his code, causing the worm to replicate at a much faster rate than intended.

As a result, the Morris Worm quickly began infecting thousands of computers across the internet, causing widespread disruption and chaos. Systems were overwhelmed, rendering them inaccessible to users. Email services were disrupted, and many computers were rendered completely unusable.
